Can you tell if it is the alternator or the battery?
Yes. That is the main point of the test. A good battery with a weak alternator, and a bad battery with a good alternator, look the same from the driver's seat and very different on the tester.
Do I need to be with the car?
Someone needs to hand over the keys and be there when we start it. The test itself takes about fifteen minutes.
